Last night was another one of those fun nights at the ER.
Why do kids always want to get sick right after the instacare closes?
Ashlee came to me about 9:40 p.m. complaining of a headache. I gave her some Ibuprofen and had her lay down in bed next to me. Fifteen minutes later she was screaming of intense pain right above her left eye and she started throwing up.
Nate arrived home right about that time from a business trip he had been on all week. I told him something was up and asked him if he wanted to come to the ER with me. He quickly declined. I think we are getting smart enough to realize that only one of us really needs to go and we can take turns. LOL.
I waited a few more minutes to see if she was going to pop out of it as fast as she popped into it, but that didn't happen. She was willing to get into the car even though I told her that there was a great likely hood that she would have to get an IV if we went to the ER. They love to give you IV's there. You know she isn't feeling well when she is willing to take that risk to make the pain go away.
Unfortunately at the ER they are really good about getting you on painkillers and anti nausea stuff the second you walk through the door. Which meant that she was feeling a lot better by the time they thought it would be a good idea to put her IV in. Therefore, that didn't go over so smoothly. At least I am well prepared for the fight when I become a nurse. Ashlee has shown me that some kids can put up an exceptional one.
She is now 10 which means she needs at least three people to hold her down plus one to do the insertion. I always get to be one of those that get to hold her down. I have done it enough times to know that one little bit of a release can mean a big ouchie for me, too bad that the other guy didn't realize that. Whoops. She isn't afraid to hit people when she thinks her life is in danger!
After the IV was put in and they started loading her with fluids her color returned and her main concern was when she got the IV to come out. Her head stopped hurting and when doctors asked if she still hurt anywhere she would point to the IV and say "only here". They did a CT scan just to make sure things were fine, which I was glad about because if it continues to happen I am just happy they ruled out a tumor. And then they said it was most likely just a migraine and sent us (5 hours later) on our way with a prescription for anti-nausea medication. I've decided that I have never had a migraine and after watching that whole episode I never want to have one either!
