The Right Sided Dillema

Tuesday was an absolutely terrorific day for me. Wednesday wasn't all that much better. Thursday was just the cherry on top. What a week.

It started Tuesday morning when Seth was hacking away complaining of a sore throat. I told him he didn't have to go to school. I am sure that is where his dreaded little cold came from, but no point it passing it on to those kids who hadn't already sucummed to it.

Ashlee woke up complaining that her tummy wasn't feeling well, like she does EVERY SINGLE DAY. I told her that it would get better after she ate something and that she had better get dressed. She had grudgingly got out of bed and gotten herself ready. She even ate breakfast!

Emmy was going back to school for the first time since her "spider" attack. I had a test scheduled for Wednesday morning and was looking forward to a quiet day of studying.

I was determined to get as many of the children off to school as possible. We were already down to 3/4 in the school count.

Well once Ashlee found out that Seth was staying home she threw a little tantrum. "You love Seth more than any of us". "You hate me the most!" "You never believe me!" and so on and so forth like she had done every day the week before when Emmy got to stay home day after day and have a "party" while Ashlee was "wasting 7 hours of her day in that stupid place."

I should have just delt with her little moaning and groaning like I do every day until it is time to push her out the door with her normal "I hate you!" and her slow walk to the bus stop. Yes, I should have just taken it like I do every other morning, but instead I burst out a snide remark... "If you really think you are so dang sick then go and get in your bed and get some rest so you can get better. ANYONE staying home today is going to stay in bed ALL day and get better. If that is what you want to do, take off your backpack and go get into your bed. (the girl was only ten more steps away from the front door... I don't know what I was thinking)

Now I thought... since she was already half way to the door to leave that she would just mutter her normal "I hate you" and leave anyway, but she actually ripped off her backpack and stomped up to her room.

CRAP... So I have to go up there and tell her how serious I am about her staying in bed all day while she is getting undressed and putting her pajamas back on screaming about how unfair I am and how she is really sick and if she can't get out of bed then Seth better not be able to get out of bed.

This argument spikes Seth's attention and he is having none of it. He asks for an ibuprofen and says he would rather try to make it through school then lay in his bed ALL day. This was the opposite of what I wanted to happen. Now Seth was going to school and Ashlee was staying home. Ugghh. What was I suppose to do? Well I am a bad mom so I let Seth go to school because I couldn't have him getting out of bed while Ashlee was making sure that Ashlee's world was 100% fair. She cares little about anyone elses world.

She stayed in her bed until about 10:30 when she decided that she needed something more to eat before she could feel well enough to go to school and then I dropped her off where she went on with her day like a normal day and got to come home and play the beloved "electronics" that they all love so much.

After dinner that night Emily went to play over at her friends house. Ashlee went a long for the car ride. She was suppose to go and play over there too, but she was being stubborn about it and said that her tummy was hurting again. I tried to get her out of the car because we had told the little girl Ashlee would play with her, but Ashlee was again stubborn as heck and I was not in the mood to drag her up to the door, so she came home with me. We were home alone while the boys were at scouts. I was studying she was playing some game on the computer. After a few minutes she came in and told me her stomach was getting worse. I gave her some pepto. She left for few more minutes. By 8:00 that night she was crying because her tummy was hurting so bad. I put her in the bathtub to see if that would help.

A few minutes later Emily called and so I went to go and get her. by now Nate was home to check Ashlee out and see if he could do anything to help.

On my way back from the friends house Ashlee called me. She was crying and said she was dying. I could tell she was in a lot of pain. I asked her where her dad was and she said she didn't know. I called Nate, who was home, and had her go and find her in the house. By the time I got home I had time to run and grab my back pack while Nate loaded Ashlee into the car and we were off to the ER. It was an all too familiar scene that we had already been through once with Seth.

When we got to the ER they IV'd the poor little girl. She tried to tell them that she was all better and didn't need the IV. I think since she was throwing up at the same time they weren't really believing it. It took three people to get the IV in her arm. After the IV was in they asked her where she was hurting. She pointed to the IV. lol.

The doctors took blood, did an evaluation... then they did and ultrasound. Nothing lead toward appendicitis... EXCEPT the physical exam with the right sided abdominal tenderness. They couldn't rule it out... so they transferred us to Primarys (which I was mad about because we had gone to the new hospital because it was close and I didn't realize they wouldn't do surgery on a kid there).

The nurse in the ER told us Primarys was having a VERY busy night and it was already 12:30 am. She said we wouldn't even get into a room for around 5 hours. She said she couldn't recommend that we go home and get some sleep, but hint hint hint. Ashlee was doing a lot better and I was already determined that it was just some stomach bug, so we went home and got some sleep. *We were in the middle of a transfer to Primarys to have them evaluate her*. We got up the next morning and I went to go and take my test and Nate went to take Ashlee up to Primarys. After my test (which I did horrible on) I had to run and get James from school because he was now having stomach problems just like Ashlees.

I then went up to the hospital to meet with Nate. There he was going through the same stuff that we had done the night before. They were still not able to rule out appendicitis, they even tried a CT scan, and so they made us stay the night. Ashlee may have been excited EXCEPT they wouldn't take out the IV which she HATED and they also had her on a clear liquid diet... and a empty stomach can only handle so much jello and popcicles.

I was just along for the ride. I got to spend the night in one of the lovely seat beds, and get woken up every two hours for vitals.

The next day we waited around ALL stinking day for the surgical team to come up and do an evaluation. They were busy so they decided to order an enema and see if that helped. Ashlee was having none of that. She wasn't going to let them put "chocolate milk" up her butt... even for payment. We tried to bribe, we tried to threaten. It was a no go... and I guess it is something extremely difficult to do if the child doesn't cooperate. Go figure?

Finally they just let her order off the menu and try solid foods. It had been almost 48 hours since she had had solid food. She ordered steak and cheese sticks with some fruit. She ate a good portion of it and was jumping on her hospital bed an hour later. We still sat around for a while longer, but eventually they let us leave. And it was actually a quick discharge, unlike usual!

It never surprised me how I come away from the hospital totally exhausted while Ashlee wants to go shopping... for food. LOL

Now we have the pretty bill to look forward to. At least she got to keep her appendix so that we can try this again next year.
