Whoopsy

Last semester in school, which in my mind just makes this all the funnier (of course that is only because it happened to Nate); I learned the seven rights of medication administration.

Right Patient
Right Drug
Right Dose
Right Route
Right Technique
Right Time
Right Documentation

See, I can even still write them all out without any help...

Well anyway...Nate and our home teacher hauled 50 of the large sheets of drywall down to the basement last night. This morning Nate could hardly move (I am just hoping the home teacher didn't have the same problem). Nate whappled (really not a name for what he was doing so I made up my own) over to James's room to get him up this morning, Then whappled back to bed, fopped (again my word) back into it and started making demands. Get me this, get me that. He wanted these pills (Durabac) that we have had for a few years. They are prescription strength back relaxers. I went and found them, read the safe dose on them and gave him the pill. It said he could only have one. Which he complained about because he wanted two... but we are all about "safety" around here. Cough. Cough.
He glubbered down his pill while I was sent to find him a hot pad. When I returned with it, our small talk consisted of him making demands for breakfast and then he mentioned something about the pill being a little smaller than he remembered. That got me thinking that it didn't really look like the pills that I remembered either. It did however come in its own individual packaging like I remembered it had and I was sure it had said Dura on it, but I went and checked it out anyway just out of curiosity. The package said Durhist. Whoops.
Durahists are made by the same company as Durabacs. They come in the same sort of packaging. It was an honest mistake that I found quite hysterical. Nate on the other hand... Not so much. Maybe that is because he had a horrible night and his back hurt and he had just popped a prescription strengh antihistamine without needing one. He told me (quite sarcastically) that I was going to make a "great nurse" one day! I was laughing too hard to care.

I found the right pills. He got TWO of them just like he had wanted in the first place AND the right pills were loaded with caffeine which could help neutralize the drowsy effects of the antihistamine. It all turned out well. And just in case his body was starting to produce too much histamine... we kicked that in the bud too. All's well that ends well.
